Mango Types Exported from Kenya

Kenya is home to over 60 cultivars, but the most widely commercialised are seven, with Apple leading, seconded by Ngowe. The Apple mango originates from the Kenyan coast and, together with local varieties, contributes to a whopping 80% of the total exports.

The Kent mango originated in Florida in the 1940s.  Reports say that Kent is a hybrid between Brooks and Haden. The appearance of Kent mangoes is large and oval-shaped fruit with a golden-yellow skin with red highlights.

Glenn mango has its origin in Miami, Florida, in the 1940s from a seedling called Saigon. The plant is named after Roscoe E. Glenn, who blend the first plant in 1943 until its commercial acceptance.

The Glenn mango is oval-shaped with a green skin that turns red and silky yellow when ripe. It also produces an exotic catchy odour that keeps customers coming for more. Amongst the mangoes grown in Kenya, Glenn is one of the most highly exported fruits.

 

The white Chaunsa mango is indigenous to South Asia, mainly India and Pakistan. It is fiberless, and its taste is a unique combination of sweetness and acidity, making it very juicy. The white Chaunsa has soft yellowish-white flesh.

This mango variety is ovular or spherical and has light green skin.  The mango’s very sweet taste ignites a debate in the mango loving community. Some consider it one of the world’s best-tasting mangoes while others conflict.

The Tommy mango parentage is a Haden seed grown in 1922 by Thomas H. Atkins. And even though the Florida Mango Forum rejected this mango, it gained a reputation amongst commercial mango fruit farmers in the 1950s. Today, it remains one of the most commercially grown mangoes in America and indeed worldwide.

The fruit is ovular or spherical, with greenish-yellow skin and orange-yellow flesh. The Tommy mango is a mildly sweet variety. However, most Kenyan exporting companies love its long shelf life. The fruit is also very firm, easing handling and transportation by reducing bruises.

The Keitt mango is a large, oval-shaped fruit that weighs several pounds. Its skin is greenish with some red blushes, and the flesh is orange-yellow, tangy, and fibres.

Most farmers love it because the variety is consistent and heavy in production, even on the first yield. Additionally, it’s comparatively resistant to disease and has a late ripening season. A combination of the two means more profit to the farmer.
